Our Mission Hills Residence showcases a sophisticated blend of Modern Mission Architecture and high-end Coastal Contemporary interior design. The home relies heavily on a seamless indoor-outdoor flow, bold geometric lines, and a dramatic, contrasting material palette.

Architectural Layout & Structure

  • Indoor-Outdoor Integration: The home is designed around a central courtyard concept. Massive floor-to-ceiling glass pocket doors slide completely away, dissolving the boundary between the interior living spaces and the exterior patios.

  • Linear and Angular Lines: The architecture utilizes clean, horizontal planes and soaring, flat rooflines. The outdoor dining area features a striking modern pergola with linear bronze colored louvers that frame the sky while providing filtered shade.

  • Textural Facades: Exterior and transition walls utilize premium, tactile surfaces, including smooth-veined concrete panel accents, stark hand-troweled plaster, and a distinctive 3D geometric accent wall featuring a recessed, repeating half-circle motif that catches shifting shadows throughout the day.

Interior Design & Material Palette

1. Color Scheme & Materials

The interior is anchored by a moody, sophisticated neutral base accented by vibrant, curated pops of color.

  • The Base: Sleek, oversized floor tiles ground the space, contrasted against crisp white walls and warm, teak cabinetry.

  • The Accents: Deep purples, plums, and vibrant magentas appear in the textiles, throw pillows, and abstract artwork, adding a luxurious, jewel-tone energy to the neutral architecture.

  • Stone and Metal: The kitchen features dramatic, heavily veined white quartzite waterfall countertops on a massive dual-island layout. High-end integrated stainless steel and glass elements (like the floor-to-ceiling wine column) reinforce the modern, clean-lined aesthetic.

2. Furnishings & Styling

  • Glam-Meets-Modern Furniture: The furniture shapes are low-profile and mid-century adjacent, but finished with high-glam textures. This is beautifully juxtaposed in the outdoor dining space, where sleek black contemporary chairs are draped in plush, oversized white sheepskin throws.

  • Lighting as Art: Lighting serves as a major focal point. Features include a heavy, traditional-meets-gothic black chandelier over the outdoor table, a shimmering spherical art deco fixture in the kitchen, and a minimalist geometric chrome light designed by the architect in conjunction with the Gibson Lighting and the homeowner.

  • Statement Art and Decor: The home acts as a gallery, showcasing large-scale abstract paintings and sculptural glass decor pieces (like the iridescent clamshell-shaped Chihuly bowl on the console) that echo the coastal proximity while remaining fiercely contemporary.

Key Spatial Highlights

  • The Double-Island Kitchen: A masterclass in luxury minimalism. It features sleek, handle-less cabinetry, hidden high-end appliances, and perfectly placed skylights that flood the working zones with natural light.

  • The Fire Feature Lounge: The outdoor transition zone centers around a sleek, linear concrete fire pit. It balances the warmth of the fire with the coolness of the stone, creating an ideal evening entertaining hub.

  • The Executive Nook/Lounge: A built-in bench seating area paired with a floating desk system allows for a functional workspace or casual lounge that feels entirely integrated into the home’s broader design language.
