Our Potato Chip Rock Residence  (arriving soon in Ramona,  CA and also available as a kit house) showcases a striking, contemporary residential design that seamlessly blends industrial materials with organic, hillside surroundings. The architecture emphasizes volume, natural light, and a strong indoor-outdoor connection.

The key architectural features and design elements include:

Form & Structure

  • Soaring Rooflines: The most prominent feature is the dramatic, single-slope shed roofthat projects outward. This creates deep overhangs that offer solar shading while giving the structure a dynamic, forward-leaning posture.

  • Perforated Eaves: The underside of the massive roof extension features an open, perforated screen. This filters sunlight, casting intricate, dappled shadow patterns onto the building’s facade and the upper-level glass.

  • Elevated Foundation: To negotiate the rugged, sloping terrain, parts of the structure are elevated on a post-and-beam platform, allowing the natural landscape and rock formations to flow underneath uninterrupted. Using this stem-wall approach eliminates the need for expensive civil engineering and grading costs.

Facade & Fenestration

  • Clerestory & Floor-to-Ceiling Windows: The home features massive expanses of glass. A continuous band of clerestory windows wraps around the upper perimeter directly beneath the roofline, flooding the double-height interior spaces with soft, ambient light.

  • Minimalist Framing: The window and door systems utilize thin, dark bronze frames, maximizing the viewing area and emphasizing clean, horizontal lines.

Interior Volume & Spatial Flow

  • Double-Height Living Spaces: The interior reveals an expansive, open-concept main floor with a soaring ceiling that follows the pitch of the roof.

  • Mezzanine / Loft Level: A partial upper floor or mezzanine overlooks the main living area, bordered by minimalist cable or glass railings. This keeps the vertical volume feeling connected rather than segmented.

  • Architectural Features: A dramatic, sculptural spiral staircase serves as a focal point in the multi-story volume. In the same area, a playful indoor swing hangs from the exposed structural ceiling joists, highlighting the casual, lifestyle-focused design.

Materials & Palette

  • Industrial Meets Organic: The palette balances cold and warm textures. Smooth, light-toned concrete or stucco walls provide a solid, neutral canvas.

  • Warm Accents: Wood paneling and cabinetry adds warmth, which counteracts the industrial feel of the concrete floors and metal framing.

  • Skylights: Strategic openings, such as the large skylight positioned directly over the bed, frame views of the sky and tree canopies, reinforcing the connection to nature.

The design is a textbook example of modern regionalism—using sharp, geometric, and industrial architecture to frame and celebrate a rugged, natural landscape.

Dancing with the oak trees, this home was designed and permitted as a family retreat. Inspired also by its proximity to Potato Chip Rock in the Poway/Ramona area. It’s also available as a kit house and can be modified for a variety of locations in California.
