This is the latest reiteration of a project I started in 2008. Originally envisioned for a submittal to the Buckminster Fuller Institute exploring ideas I had developed with my students while teaching at Woodbury University and The Newschool of Architecture and based on my interests in sacred geometry and ‘form as energetic container’ theory. The building is primarily based on Buckminster Fuller’s vector equilibrium. A shape he said contained the “whole phenomenology of the structure of the Universe.” The vector equilibrium represents the ultimate and perfect condition where the movement of energy comes to a state of absolute equilibrium, and therefore obtaining a state of complete neutrality. The tower uses Fuller’s perfect shape as a starting point and then applies Sir D’Arcy Wentworth Thompson’s theories on species evolution to create a space that connects to the continuity of forms found in nature for a more harmonious spatial experience. Since 2008 the project has been developed using physical models, computer models, 3D printing, and now utilizing the power of modern computing for photorealistic design, modeling, and visualization of the work.
